Physicians pursuing a career in clinical research generally aim at reaching a secure position in a clinical setting that includes protected time dedicated to developing and diversifying their research field(s) and projects. 

Some physicians develop an interest in research during their postgraduate specialist training (ISFM/SIWF). Others identify this interest during their undergraduate studies and may start their postgraduate training with some research experience and a doctorate (MD, PhD, or MD-PhD). There is not a single career pathway to follow, and several options can lead to a secure position. Each career trajectory has its advantages and needs to be balanced with your own interests and personal life.
